Whitney was founded in September of 1879.  Lots were sold on the 18th day of November, 1879.  The town was named for Charles A. Whitney of New York, New York, who was a stockholder of the Texas Central Railroad.  Whitney was the first railroad town of Hill County.  The first house was a box house moved from Towash.   The first mayor was E. Parr, Who built the first rock house in Whitney.

The old railroad depot was built sometime after the railroad brought Whitney into being. The depot was probably built sometime during the early 1900's and stood just south of the present downtown area at the end of Brazos street.
